What made you decide you wanted to be a photographer?
I never would have imagined this is what I would be doing as a profession. I went to college to be an X-ray tech and worked in that field for 8 years. Like so many, I was a mom that enjoyed taking pictures of her own children and the obsession with photography just escalated from there. I just fell completely in love with it. My friends and family started asking me to take pictures of their children and it just kind of exploded from there.
How would you describe your photography style?
That is a hard question for me! It seems like my style is ever evolving. Right now, I am in love with color and bold clean image processing, although my newborns stay a little softer. I would say that my shooting style is very unscripted when it comes to children and families. I love to just sit back and watch what a child will do next and I often find that my favorite images are the ones that show the emotion of my subject, not just a smile.
What kind of camera do you shoot with?
Canon 5D Mark II
What is your favorite lens?
I am a prime girl. The Canon 85mm 1.8 is my fav!
What are a few things you wish you would have known when starting your own business?
I wish I would have known from the very beginning what it takes to successfully run your own business. Having a business is HARD, and there really is a fine line balancing your family life and your work. Taking pictures is about 10% of the whole equation and I definitely wish I would have taken more business classes in school thats for sure! 😉
What do you find is the best way to promote your photography business?
I think offering great customer service is hands down the best way I promote my business. Word of mouth is how most of my clients find me. I think that if people are happy with a product they will share it with their friends and family. Of course, Facebook gets my images seen by so many and I am always in awe of the reach it has.
What is your most favorite photo you have ever taken and why?
Gosh, that is constantly changing!! Right now, it’s a picture of my daughter. Sometimes you don’t realize how fast your children are changing in everyday life. When I took this one, for some reason she just grew up right before my eyes.
What tip would you give aspiring photographers?
Keep your family first! Learn the business side as much as the photography side and educate yourself every chance you get.
What is your favorite photography quote?
“Beauty can be seen in all things, seeing and composing the beauty is what separates the snapshot from the photograph.” – Matt Hardy
