Welcome to Adore Logo Designs’ first Featured Friday! Yaay! How exciting!
This week’s featured photographer is Sara, from Sara Gatlin Photography and I must say that her work is simply AH-MAZE-ING!
Check out her interview!
What made you decide you wanted to be a photographer?
I got my first camera at a very young age. I’m not sure why I wanted it but I just got this little, nothing special point & shoot camera for Christmas one year. I’ve had several cameras since then & with each one I started realizing that I enjoyed photographing things a lot, & with a lot of praise from my parents I became more & more eager to take photos.
How would you describe your photography style?
I would say my style is natural. I like afternoon sun, windswept hair, lots of movement & candid shots. I like the in-between moments. I definitely lean more towards the lifestyle category of photography.
What kind of camera do you shoot with?
Canon 5D Mkii
What is your favorite lens?
What are a few things you wish you would have known when starting your own business?
I wish I would have known to ask questions. I am a self-taught photographer. I learned everything from reading articles online and watching behind the scenes videos of other photographers. And of course tons of practice. I’ve always been one to rely on myself to figure it out rather to ask questions. Now that i’ve learned to ask questions I’ve done a mentorship, attended shoot-outs with other photographers, & made friends with photographers all around the country. It’s so helpful to have people to communicate with! I am proud to have taught myself everything I know, but it’s always nice to have help!
What do you find is the best way to promote your photography business?
Since I shoot mostly Seniors, definitely Facebook. Facebook has given us business pages our fair share of difficulties here lately but I dont think that I could ever let go of it. Most of my clients contact me through my Facebook page. Instagram has also seemed to be a growing factor here lately too!
What is your most favorite photo you have ever taken and why?
I sat here & thought about this question for a while but kept coming back to the same photo. I think the photo I took of my grandmother this past year will always be my favorite. She acted slightly embarrassed when I held my camera up to take a photo of her, but then sweetly smiled. I love my grandmother so much & I know this is a photo I will cherish forever.
What tip would you give aspiring photographers?
Practice. Practice, practice, PRACTICE. With all things, practice makes perfect. You cannot rely on a “nice camera” to get you the photos you want. You have train your eye to see the photos before you even hold the camera up to your eye. Take your camera everywhere. Dont be afraid to be that person taking photos in a crowd of people. And I say this even though I do this to myself quite too often: dont compare yourself to other photographers. Especially dont compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. That is the easiest way to get down on yourself.
What is your favorite photography quote?
“To photograph is to hold one’s breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.” Henri Cartier-Bresson
