Featured Friday | Capturing Grace Photography

This week’s featured photographer is Kristy, from Capturing Grace Photography
Check out her interview!

What made you decide you wanted to be a photographer?
I was actually a teacher for 10 years and on my way to getting a Masters in Reading when my daughter Grace surprised us! I decided I wanted to stay home with her instead of going back to teaching, but I longed for a creative outlet that I missed from my teaching days. I started out with scrapbooking, which led me to photography. And as soon as I picked up my first DSLR I was hooked!

How would you describe your photography style?
Whimsical. Colorful. Light. Airy. Playful. Eclectic.

What kind of camera do you shoot with?
Nikon d600 Nikon d 7000

What is your favorite lens?
50 mm

What are a few things you wish you would have known when starting your own business?
Not to sell myself short! I did not value my time and consider how much I would be giving up to grow my business, and so I charged rates that were too low and gave too much! I lacked confidence in my abilities as an artist, and I was too wishy-washy as a business person.

What do you find is the best way to promote your photography business?
Word of mouth is the strongest way I have grown my business thus far. So I strive to produce AMAZING work for people so that they just have to share with their friends! I want to be a household name, and be memorable to people so that when someone says “I need a photographer” they think of me!

What is your most favorite photo you have ever taken and why?
3 months after I started my business I was asked to photograph a sunset wedding on the beach. I was nervous…no I was TERRIFIED! But it went so well. This particular silhouette photo was, at that time, the Holy Grail of photos for me. It was a goal I had been trying to achieve. When I saw that I had succeeded with this shot I was so proud of myself and it gave me the confidence to set higher and higher goals! (My next “Holy Grail” was the head in hands newborn photo!)

What tip would you give aspiring photographers?
READ!!!!!!! Google it. Every question you have as an aspiring photographer has probably been asked already. And you can likely find the answer in a book or anywhere on the Internet! When I am not photographing, editing, marketing or doing any number of things for my business, I am reading everything I can get my hands on to make myself a better photographer. I always want to be better than I was the day before and I believe reading is the way to do it!

What is your favorite photography quote?
Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow. – Immogen Cunningham
